Your Family’s Legacy Through Photography | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

As Northern Virginia photographers near Brambleton, VA and Broadlands, VA, we often talk about the importance of creating a photographic legacy of family. It is possible to combine your snapshots as well as professional portraiture to craft that legacy – sort of a photographic journal.

The snapshots you take of your children and family help fill its pages. Your professional portraits, on the other hand, represent the chapters of the journal. You can have one without the other, but together they document your life more thoroughly and richly. Together, they literally construct and document the bigger picture of your life story, your family’s story.

We recently came across an interesting article by Darlene Hildebrandt offering insight and tips to creating a photographic legacy. It’s good reminder of the role photography – both professional and amateur – can play in our lives. We have summarized its suggestions below for you. However, we strongly recommend clicking on the link to read Darlene’s full article!

• Documentary means you capture it naturally in the subject’s environment.
For family snapshots which can be a great way to document your family’s home life, just keep your camera charged and handy at all times. Whip it out for any particularly poignant moments.

• Capture the person’s essence – their real personality.
As professional photographers, this is our goal for each portrait session, especially baby pictures! We want to reflect the subject’s true character and personality in the portrait so that years from now, it will serve as a terrific legacy to who they were.

• Remember to capture the details and scene setters.
This can be rather subjective but one example is the beloved teddy bear included in a toddler’s picture; the shiny new wedding ring on a bride’s finger in a wedding picture; or the tear streaming down a grandmother’s face.

• Think big picture.
Take shots for the background of a collage or potential photobook or album. Knowing what your plans are for a photo or portrait can make a difference in its staging. Snapshots are just that – something snapped quickly and easily for any number of purposes. Take them at a baby shower and you can create a photo book as a gift. A portrait, on the other hand, has a bigger purpose and, usually, destination. As family photographers, we compose and stage it so that it’s a piece of art to display in your home for generations.

• Not every photo needs to show their face.
This is a powerful technique. Some of the most poignant or memorable portraits don’t show the subject’s face. Think of the iconic photograph of the soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Although shot in silhouette, it’s no less powerful.

• Create a story with images. Leave a legacy.
We can’t repeat this one enough. Images and pictures tell a story. You can tell your story for the generations not yet born by taking your daily snapshots and, more importantly, by doing professional portraits. The portraits, unlike the snapshots, will be professionally printed on museum-quality medium rated to last 150 to 200 years, a true family heirloom.

• Create memories.
Capture your memories in portraiture so that you can share your story well into the future through the portraits.

We are Northern Virginia photographers focused on helping our clients throughout Northern Virginia, including Brambleton, VA and Broadlands, VA and surrounding communities. We want to help you document your family’s legacy through professional portraits.

Portraits, Tangible or Intangible? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Portraits, Tangible or Intangible? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Portraits, Tangible or Intangible? | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

Have you ever thought how much your things mean to you? Is there a tangible or intangible value to them? Most people would say tangible. A friend of ours, however, recently had a thought-provoking conversation with her daughter on this same topic. It reminded us of our portrait post on whether photography is tangible or intangible. As an experienced newborn photographer in the Broadlands, VA area, we know that there are both tangible and intangible benefits to photography. So, we thought we’d share our friend’s chat with you – with their permission, of course!

Our friend and her daughter were discussing the popular tiny house movement. She admitted to her daughter that, while fascinated with these smallest of homes, she didn’t think she could live in one permanently. She wasn’t willing to give up so many of her possessions to be able to live in a tiny house. Surprised, her millennial daughter called her out on how materialistic that sounded. Her mother had raised her quite differently than that.

The mom went on to explain. The things she valued, and would find tough to part with, weren’t things like expensive shoes or handbags – although, let’s face it, those aren’t easy to part with either! For our friend, it would be difficult to let go of some things she’d collected throughout her life’s experiences and extensive travels. The most important of those things were photo albums of family and travels, professional portraits, as well as several dozen photos from a gallery wall art collection she’d created in her home.

Moving into a tiny home would mean getting rid of these items or, at the very least, putting them away in storage where she could no longer enjoy them. This family had moved internationally quite a bit during the years following the husband’s finance career. The many family portraits are what helped make any “house” into their latest “home.” Our friend felt strongly about being able to enjoy these precious pictures no matter where she lived. She didn’t feel that putting them into storage or onto a CD or DVD would be acceptable to her. And, we can understand why.

You can enjoy displayed wall portraits every day or browse through an album displayed on a coffee table for all visitors to enjoy. Newborn photography can be especially wonderful because each day you can see the growth and changes in your baby compared to its first days of life!

A CD, on the other hand, is not the same. While they are valuable for backup storage, the ability to enjoy the contents is limited. It’s not unusual that someone who purchases images on a disc finds themselves dissatisfied and wants more tangible proof of their portrait session.

We always recommend finished portraits. Their benefits are both tangible and intangible. Their value is priceless. The enjoyment is everlasting and immeasurable.

As a newborn photographer near you in the Broadlands, VA region, we believe that portrait photography is one of the most meaningful and enjoyable gifts you can give yourself. Call us today to schedule your newborn, baby or family portrait session.

There’s good news and bad news when it comes to an Ever After portrait session – especially pictures of babies! The bad news is that it can be difficult to choose your pictures after your session with us because you’ll fall in love with so many! It’s not unusual for us to have a client in our studio near Broad Run Farms, VA and Leesburg, VA struggling to narrow down portraits to purchase. You, too, might feel like you can’t select just one! However, the good news is: You don’t have to! We offer many great products for our clients.

As a newborn photographer we’ve noticed that a particularly favorite product with parents is a Fine Art Platinum or Gold Album. Our Fine Art Albums are like a beautiful, coffee-table book starring your child!

Platinum Fine Art Legacy Albums

Our Platinum albums are the best we have to offer when it comes to Fine Art Albums. They are handcrafted in the U.S. and are available in various sizes and covers. Rated in the 100-plus years category, they use silver halide paper and archival inks. There is no better material for an album! Silver halide is the “gold standard” for professionally printed portrait albums. Pictures will not discolor with age, and the quality of the paper ensures no creasing or bending.

Gold Fine Art Legacy Albums

Gold albums offer top of the line quality and feature a full-wrap cover. They are printed on museum-quality paper with high-quality inks. The colors are vivid as a result of this process. Your portraits are displayed professionally on each page. Pages are flush with no creases and consist of thick materials so you don’t have to worry about bending the page. They are also laminated to provide protection against scratches. These books are also rated to last more than 100 years.

Build Family Togetherness Through Portraits | Northern VA Newborn Photographer

A great portrait should stop you in your tracks. And, when it’s your newborn or child’s face beaming out from that picture, it’s all the more poignant. The joy that children and newborn photos bring is absolutely undeniable! Decorating your home with your children’s pictures is a clear choice for parents, and most of our clients throughout the Broad Run Farms, VA area do just that. It is a creative way to express love for your children within your family!

There are so many ways to decorate beautifully using your children’s portraits. In a blog post by blogger/photographer Kristen Duke, she discusses this same idea. You’ll enjoy browsing through her blog. She’s got a lot of great ideas including numerous ones about how to use family portraits in your home.
Kristen sees the value in using your family’s images to turn a house into a home. Your family and newborn photos can be appreciated as more than art. Quality, fine art portraits of your loved ones become heirloom pieces to pass down through the generations. Even before they become heirloom pieces, family photography displayed throughout a home bathe the home and its family in love. You can start with newborn photography and add portraits as your family grows through the years.

There is plenty of research indicating that when children see themselves as part of a larger, bonded unit, they have better self-esteem. Children and family photography represent and demonstrate to a child the love of family. This is why we always encourage our clients to display their beautiful family on the walls of the family home. If a home is truly where the heart is, then foster, nourish, and honor that love – always!

Choices! Choices!

We want our clients to have quality options so we offer two framed lines of wall art: Masterpiece & Standard. We also offer four frameless lines for a different, more contemporary look: Bamboo, Gallery Wrap, Ice, and Steel. You can build family togetherness through portraits!

If you’d like to learn more about how to decorate your home with your beautiful children’s portraits, contact us. We’d be happy to discuss our fine art photography and the difference it can make in your life, your home, and your legacy.

Family and Child Gallery Wall | Northern VA Baby Photographer

Family and Child Gallery Wall | Northern VA Baby Photographer

Family and Child Gallery Wall | Northern VA Baby Photographer

The very exciting thing about taking maternity photos here in the Leesburg, VA area is knowing that soon after our portrait sessions, new life will be brought into this world. Oh, how we love babies! So when clients ask us how they could use portraits to decorate their nurseries, we are all too happy to provide some ideas. Here are a few tips below.

Child’s Gallery Wall
Why not create a portrait gallery wall of your baby’s pictures? Start with a selection of newborn portraits. As you do more portraits of them (and you should), you can swap out a few for the more recent pictures. Through the years, the wall of portraits becomes a timeline of their childhood! It’s a touching way to show them how they’ve grown through the years.

Family & Child Gallery Wall
Another great idea is to create a family portrait gallery wall in your child’s nursery. You can blend your baby’s pictures with family portraits. It is a loving way to reflect your family while showing your child how proud you are of them. It demonstrates to your child how they are part of something bigger than just them. They are not alone!

Siblings
If there are siblings, it can be fun to display portraits of the siblings together in each other’s rooms. The only child has had pictures of herself in her room. When her new sibling is born, you add a portrait of the two of them into both the nursery and the older sister’s room. The new pictures are a terrific way to reflect the sisters’ new bond. As the girls grow, you continue to either add portraits or swap out portraits. Displaying siblings together in photos is a loving and touching way of emphasizing their love and their bonds. It also shows your children how much you value their relationship.

Other Ideas
If you would rather not display on walls, you can order albums for each child featuring an array of portraits of themselves, family, and siblings. A portrait album for each child becomes a treasured possession for them.

When each child is born, you can order a Portrait Cube. Save it until the day it can be displayed in their room with pride, love, and a tad bit of respect (no chewing on it!). One day they’ll enjoy seeing themselves on a nifty cube!

Coordinating Design
We can assist you with coordinating your wall art design by using our special software. We can help you coordinate any portrait session so that it blends smoothly and very well into any room or on any wall in your home! We do it very often for nurseries! With a little bit of planning, you can decide whether you want a black and white or color portrait for the nursery.

Is the nursery designed with a particular color theme? We can incorporate that into the portrait. In a yellow nursery, a newborn picture featuring one item in yellow will look spectacular on the nursery’s wall! The look is cohesive and smart.

Thinking of how to decorate your baby’s nursery with portraits can be a lot of fun and bring you a lot of joy. If you are doing your newborn and maternity photos with us here in the Leesburg, VA area, we can discuss how we can help you. If you would simply like to work with us to do your children’s portraits, we’d love to do that as well!
